20 Ways to Make a Decision

airstream, by ubercultureMy husband and I are in the midst of dealing with what we’ve dubbed La Bombe – the bomb our landlord dropped on us when he informed us that he and his new family will move into our apartment. We’ve got until the end of October.

Tricky timing, though. The upcoming winter Olympics here in Vancouver mean that housing is rapidly becoming as valuable as gold and landlords are tending toward short-term, mega-buck renting rather than longer-term.

So we’re using La Bombe to examine some out-there ideas, like moving to Germany or to a little island off the coast of mainland British Columbia.

We face lots of options on lots of levels. Decision proliferation threatens to lead to decision paralysis. In response, I’ve developed a reference list for ways to make a decision. Different ways work at different times for different circumstances.

  1. Weigh the pros and cons
  2. Ask a trusted advisor
  3. Gather more information
  4. Take a leap of faith
  5. Prioritize
  6. Vividly imagine various outcomes
  7. Set a deadline
  8. Hire an expert
  9. Sleep on it
  10. Do something, even if it’s wrong
  11. Meditate
  12. Use consensus
  13. Be impulsive
  14. Let joy lead
  15. Abdicate responsibility
  16. Consult the I Ching
  17. Heed intuition
  18. Do a trial run and evaluate the results
  19. Ask a gathered group
  20. Wait until the last moment

Pep Talk | Tenderize

1..2..3..Fire!, by juliam1111

You guard your softness at times, I’ll bet. When, though? Only when to do otherwise would truly get you hurt? Or has that defensive wall become a habit?

Prove to yourself that the world requires your sensitivity.

After years of wariness around a fierce, but beloved, friend of mine, I decided to be myself around her, no matter what. Rather than trying to fit in with her and her crowd, I stood my ground as the real me, even when it meant saying no, or saying or doing something I couldn’t predict a reaction to. One day, after I started doing this, my friend said, “You are one of the easiest people I’ve ever known to just be around, to just be with.”

Lose the hard shell. Tenderize your surroundings.

Rather than assuming you’ll be splatted, test the edge of the envelope. Notice when you close up from the untried assumption that your soft, glorious, sensitive perspective will get you stomped. You’re much, much stronger than this culture’s idea of being sensitive may have led you to believe you are.

Experiment with letting your guard down more often than you do. Be selective, but be persistent. Start small and safe, but notice as you go how habit doesn’t always serve you. Discover all the ways, every circumstance, in which your sensitive perspective makes a positive difference.

Take a risk. Take the shell off. Take off.

Stimulus Maximus

Free sunset flamingo pink..., by D Sharon Pruitt of Pink Sherbet Photography

When the swirl of life pushes me toward overwhelm, my automatic response is to rush toward stimulus minimus. But there’s an error of perspective there.

What I really want is stimulus maximus, just like everyone else on the planet. I want the maximum input that I can handle. I want Life, with a capital L. I want vitality and breathtaking wonder and revelations complete with operatic accompaniment.

If all of that comes to me in a different way than it comes to the majority of humans, is it any less maximus? Of course not. Maximus is relative. It’s only minimus by comparison. Sure, the way I get off can look like stimulus minimus (a riveting idea, a colour combination seen in passing from a bus window, a silly look exchanged with my nephew), but only if compared with someone who’s different – like someone who whoops it up on the bus, all the way to the bungee-jumping festival.

Comparison damages our souls. Consider yourself worthy of the full package: all senses firing at maximum capacity, tuned, honed, and giddy – thriving in your very own, very valid version of Life with a capital L.

Shove all those other people off the scale. Recalibrate. Find your own stimulus maximus.

“Sometimes I go about pitying myself
And all the while I am being carried across the sky
By beautiful clouds.”
