Successfully Sensitive | Denise Smith

Event Planner and Founder of Chicks Who Click

Denise Smith

Denise thrives in her work as a professional communitarian (she’s inspired me to invent a new word), fostering connections as an event planner for Metzger Associates and the founder of ChicksWhoClick.net – a system of one-day networking conferences in different cities, to help people “Create. Connect. Collaborate.” on the topics of social networking, technology, and empowerment.

For information, including upcoming conference details, see the Chicks Who Click website. For inspiration and profiles, see the Chicks Who Click blog.

In what way are you most successfully sensitive?

With this current project – Chicks Who Click, being successfully sensitive has to do with being open-minded, inclusive, and energized. I’m enjoying building and facilitating an online community of like-minded women. Through our conferences we’re empowering, educating, and facilitating an important and lively conversation. It is hugely rewarding to watch an idea take shape just as I had envisioned it would. To witness a community collaborating and connecting in this space is completely encouraging and stimulating.

What or who has inspired you to embrace your sensitivity?

Becoming a mother and raising a son is a big contributor to me embracing my sensitivity. The caring and compassion that emerges with my children is like no other experience. When I have to stop and realize that I’m not the number one priority anymore and that someone is counting on me to be present and to be a role model, that definitely forces me to take a step back and think about putting my best foot forward.

What are your eternal fascinations?

Exploring the world through the colors, the people, and the cultures. It completely energizes me to see how other people live and to be able to contrast that with my life. Being able to incorporate customs, flavors, and aesthetics from other regions of the world is enthralling to me.

What quest currently captivates you?

Being whole and balanced, feeling comfortable in my skin, embracing my chronological progression, staying young at heart, constantly striving for intellectual challenge, opening my heart and giving back to my community.

What is your favourite kind of help to give?

I am a connector of people. I love to network and bring people together either through common interests or from complete opposite walks of life. It’s amazing how much we can all learn from each other.

baile de salon, by habaneroAs a human, you thrive on free movement. As a sensitive being, you also thrive on positive response to stimuli.

Imagine the first bite into ripe fruit. Juice drips down your chin. You laugh. You use your hand to wipe your face. You lick your hand. You lean forward and bite again, let the drips run down your chin and onto the hot pavement.

You’re sensual. Don’t fight it.

You chew the ripe fruit and swallow the sweetness. You loosen. Your neighbour’s on the porch with the radio tuned to perfection. The singer’s voice rasps in time to a beat that makes your hips move without your consent. You follow. Shake the juice off the tips of your fingers. Smile at your neighbour. Get your shoulders into the act. Sway with intent. As they move, your bare feet meet the cool wetness of the dripped juice.

Sensuality is messy. Sticky. Perfectly normal.

Sensitivity that gets teased at work has a twin called sensuality. If you’re sensitive, you’ve got the equipment for more pleasure than normal. More joy from the juice. More heat from the sun. More depth from the symphony. More shiver from the look. So move. More.

Find the positive side of more. Then lose yourself.

Book | Fitting in is Overrated

Fitting in is Overrated, by Leonard FelderLeonard Felder’s book adds his sure, comforting, and erudite voice to the growing chorus of people championing sensitivity and oddness. Fitting in is Overrated: The Survival Guide for Anyone Who Has Ever Felt Like an Outsider proceeds calmly to dismantle inclinations to remain hidden, urging us instead to develop whatever it is that makes us oddly knowledgeable.

Imagine this reasonable man’s voice speaking his encouragements to you and see if you feel more able to make your own mark in your own way:

“What if your greatest breakthrough in life depends on your coming to terms with the very issue that has made you feel ashamed?”

“For just a moment, stop and ask yourself what Ang Lee, Macy Gray, Betty Friedan, Viktor Frankl, Faith Hill, Alex Haley, Antonio Villaraigosa, Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, Charles Schwab, Yo-Yo Ma, and Oprah Winfrey have in common. They are all sensitive individuals who suffered painful exclusion and self-doubt before they found their particular way to thrive as outsiders. They each hit a point in their lives when they had to decide, ‘Is it more important to fit in, or can I find enough support for expressing the gifts and insights I’ve discovered as a result of being different from most people?'”

“How do you balance the desire to be accepted by the people around you with the desire to follow what’s in your heart and soul?”

“I’ve found that in order to respond effectively to someone who is treating you rudely, the first essential step is to stop for a moment and make a promise to yourself: “I’m going to handle this with decency and integrity no matter what.” Thousands of clients have found that just this one silently spoken sentence can give great strength and clarity during a stressful moment. This powerful vow or mantra can snap you out of the victim mentality and into a sense of creativity and strength. Rather than stooping to the other person’s level, your mind begins to feel clearer, better able to handle a tough situation with dignity and grace.”

Successfully Sensitive | Saskia Röell

Author and Transformational Life Coach

Saskia Roell, from Saskia

Saskia walks her talk. She teaches what she naturally knows: how to let the soul lead the way. In her Amazon-bestselling book A Suitcase Full of Faith: How One Woman Found Her Dream Trusting the Compass of Her Soul, she shows how it’s done, using the stories of her own rich life as teaching tools and thus making the learning fun.

Through Illuminated Transformation – her Transformational Life Coach practice – Saskia helps people get to the nitty-gritty of what’s in the way and discover which way to go by using the powerful tools of faith and courage. She’s a master. And she firmly believes you’re a master, too.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

In what way are you most successfully sensitive?

I’ve danced my way through life as a feeler, sensing my way into every decision. I ask myself, “How do I feel about this or that?” My logical mind has not been in the way. I’ve dreamed big and thought everything was possible as long I followed the compass of my soul. That deep place of inner knowing has guided me safely and, indeed, has led me to the fulfillment of many dreams. I traveled through Africa, Asia, Egypt, Japan, Israel, China, and Europe in my quest to understand what life was about. My life’s path is a reflection of me following the bigger journey of my soul. Now I take great pleasure from helping others tune in to and trust their own deep feelings and find their own life’s path.

What or who has inspired you to embrace your sensitivity?

As a young girl growing up in a family of seven in Holland I was blessed with parents who stimulated and praised my uniqueness. They placed very few limits. I had a lot of freedom to express myself in the way I wanted. Growing up, I thought everyone was like me. I didn’t know I was unusually sensitive until I was older. The more I’ve acknowledged myself for who I am, the more I’ve learned to care for my own sensitivity.

I learn a lot about what I need to do to support my sensitivity by noticing contrasts. For example, when my family and I first moved to America seven years ago, our summer was filled with guests from Holland. The house was full for three long months. Guess what? When everyone finally left, the house drifted back into serenity and I could hear the sounds of the ocean again. I realized I had ignored my yearning to be with Me, and therefore lost myself. I realized that I need to be alone for some part of every day in order to feel connected with the divine in me.

I need to be aware of when I become overly dramatic and remind myself not be caught up in a story, but to focus on the true Me instead. To be so deeply in touch with my feelings is a challenge and a blessing at the same time.

What are your eternal fascinations?

The journey of the soul. How can I embrace and express my divinity full-force in this life? I’m fascinated by the idea that my purpose is not about me, but about the divine within me. The last phrase of my book A Suitcase Full of Faith, is “living on the bare feet of my soul, fearless and free,” which is about saying, “Yes. Here I am,” and expressing my unique purpose, no matter what.

What else? How our inner world always reflects the outer world. How faith bridges the gap between our aspirations and the manifestation of our dreams. That fear is a figment of the mind and faith is a virtue of the soul. How my five children have such a zest for life, how they live with an endless amount of faith and trust in the goodness of life. How gratitude brings us into the highest vibration.

What quest currently captivates you?

To follow the deep Yes within me. To see what happens when I let go and let God. When my faith is strengthened there is no need to have control. Things flow as they will and I flow with them.

What is your favourite kind of help to give?

Through my writing and coaching, I help people connect with their joy, passion, and purpose. I teach the art of shedding baggage: How to let go of the past and step into your own spotlight. I love to ignite courage to help people make extraordinary choices, which are key to letting go and moving out of the comfort zone, for only then can we grow. When I give someone that final push to fly into their own greatness and they dare to take a leap of faith, my heart is fulfilled.
