Makes me think of Merlin Stone’s comment in “When God Was A Woman” that the original intention of guilt was that one would do something, feel badly about it or its results, and not do it again. Not how it’s thought of today: do something, feel badly, do again anyway.
And, yes, one *can* make amends years later, even, just by centering, seeing the person you feel you harmed in your mind’s eye and apologizing to them.
So important not to carry regret and/or guilt around! Thanks for the reminder!
Great comment, Jo.
This prompt started out as “Invent a regret. Make amends anyway,” but I ended up deciding that we all probaly have enough actual regrets that making real amends for real regrets might be more useful.
That said, I think, sometimes, we do invent regrets where we don’t need them — and examining that can make us realize that we’ve been holding on to something that’s not worth holding onto anymore.
